Swedish coach Sven Goran Eriksson enjoyed a second season in Lisbon just as successful as his first by ensuring that Benfica won back-to-back Primeiro Divisão titles.

Eriksson assembled a fine attacking unit starring Nené, Diamantino, and the Dane Michael Manniche. All three hit double figures for the season, and Nené was especially prolific with 30 goals in all competitions. European Cup progress was ended at the Quarter Final stage by eventual champions Liverpool.
