With the veteran Miguel Muñoz in charge for his second season, Sevilla completed the 1980-81 La Liga season with a respectable eighth-placed finish.

This was a solid and well-organized team driven by regulars like Paco Buyo in goal, Choya in midfield, and Yiyi in attack with the goals mostly supplied by Carlos Morete and Enrique Montero. Morete was a great success in what was his sole season at the Ramón Sánchez Pizjuán after arriving at the club from Las Palmas to replace his Argentinian compatriot Daniel Bertoni.
