The 1970s was an up and down decade for Real Betis. The club reached the heights of fifth place in La Liga, Copa del Rey success in 1977 and a European run which saw them eliminate AC Milan, but also suffered several relegations during the same period.

Emerging players like Javier López, Antonio Benítez, and Francisco Bizcocho formed the backbone of the club for most of the decade, and its most successful and long-serving managers were Rafael Iriondo and the Hungarian Ferenc Szusza.
