The early 1990s was a thrilling time for AS Cannes who were enjoying the most successful years in the club's long history. A historic fourth-placed Ligue 1 finish in 1991 took the club into European competition for the first time and they would reach the second round before being narrowly elmininated by Dynamo Moscow.

This was a team featuring the precocious skills of a young Zinedine Zidane, the experience of the veteran Luis Fernandez and the goals of Franck Priou, yet an unusual domestic campaign brought a surprise relegation. It would be a brief absence and Cannes would be back in style the following year.
