Dukla Prague's most successful coach, Jaroslav Vejvoda, returned to the club for a third spell in charge in 1975 and quickly re-established the Prague giants as Czechoslovakia's foremost club. A title win would follow in 1976 - 77, but the 1977 - 78 season saw the club narrowly miss out.

A powerful squad which featured numerous Czech internationals like Zdeněk Nehoda, Jan Fiala and Ladislav Vízek finished two points adrift of first-time champions Zbrojovka Brno, despite defeating them home and away during the League campaign.
