The 2001 - 02 campaign was a bittersweet one for FC Lorient mixing disappointment with relegation from Ligue 1 with joy of a first-ever major trophy win in the club's history - the Coupe de France.

Les Merlus overcame Rennes, Louhans-Cuiseaux, PSG and Nimes to earn a final appearance against Bastia. A single goal victory was the outcome, the winner coming near half-time from quick forward Jean-Claude Darcheville. As if one major final was not enough, Lorient also reached the final of the Coupe de la Ligue but lost out to Bordeaux.
