While much of the focus during the 1979 80 season was concentrated on Nottingham Forest’s ultimately successful quest to retain the European Cup, Brian Clough’s side was involved in a largely positive domestic campaign too.

After top two finishes the previous couple of seasons, Forest fell away a little this year and ended their campaign in a still respectable fifth position. Their quest to win a third successive League Cup took them once more to Wembley, however unfancied Wolves emerged victorious by a single goal margin.

Dangerous striker Tony Woodcock left during the season for Germany but there was still plenty of goal scoring threat in the team with Trevor Francis, Garry Birtles and John Robertson all hitting double figures in the League.
