A first World Cup qualification had arrived in 1982, and the Indomitable Lions performed above expectations by drawing all three group games and being unlucky not to progress to the knock-out rounds.

Two years later Cameroon overcame Nigeria to become champions of Africa for the first time, and as the decade neared its end, a powerful team was coming together under the experienced leadership of the Russian, Valery Nepomnyashchy.
