ATLETICO NACIONAL
Founded in 1947 and based in Medellín, Atlético Nacional is Colombia’s most decorated football club, known for its iconic green and white colors and home ground at Estadio Atanasio Girardot. With 17 league titles and two Copa Libertadores trophies, "Los Verdolagas" have built a reputation as a powerhouse in both domestic and international football.
The 1980s marked a historic era for the club. After clinching a domestic title in 1981 under Argentine coach Zubeldía, Nacional experienced a renaissance under former player Francisco Maturana. Appointed in 1987, Maturana assembled a legendary squad featuring René Higuita, Andrés Escobar, Leonel Álvarez, Alexis García, and John Tréllez. This star-studded team made history by guiding Atlético Nacional to its first-ever Copa Libertadores title in 1989, defeating Olimpia of Paraguay in a dramatic penalty shootout. The campaign featured notable victories over Racing Club, Millionarios, and Danubio, cementing Nacional as Colombia’s first continental champions.
From pioneering tactical innovation to developing legendary talent, Atlético Nacional’s legacy is one of bold ambition and lasting impact in South American football.
