Having enjoyed a series of strong seasons the 1996-97 campaign proved a more challenging one for Borussia Mönchengladbach. Swedish striker Martin Dahlin left for Roma and his absence was felt in the early months of the season as the team fell into the relegation zone.

Long-serving coach Bernd Krauss departed and was replaced by Hannes Bongartz and this change, along with the quick return of Dahlin from Italy, lifted die Fohlen to safety. Dahlin combined well with Andrzej Juskowiak and other newcomers like Robert Enke and Ioan Lupescu started to make an impression as the season.
