Having been a powerhouse of the African game in the 1960s, Ghana declined in stature over the next decade and it wasn't until the early part of the 1980s that the Black Stars began to restore their reputation.

A fourth African Cup of Nations title was won in 1982 with a penalty shoot-out win over the hosts, Libya. Forward George Alhassan finished as the top scorer with four goals, and the tournament saw the debut of Abedi Pele, a future Ghanaian legend in the making. Another brilliant forward in Tony Yeboah would emerge a few years later.

Ghana's coach Charles Gyamfi provided the story of the tournament having previously coached the nation to success in the tournament in both 1963 and 1965. He left after that second victory and returned 17 years later on the eve of the 1982 tournament to miraculously repeat his earlier accomplishments.
