The 1960s marked a radical change in Argentinian football, transforming from skilful individualism and outdated tactics to a pragmatic and aggressive European-style game based around solid defense and counter-attack. After poor performances in the 1962 World Cup, a new footballing identity emerged under coach José Minella. Argentina's victory in the 1964 Nations Cup included a 3-0 win over World champions Brazil, showcasing smart tactics and calculated aggression.

Under coach Juan Carlos Lorenzo, Argentina brought a strong squad to the 1966 World Cup in England, featuring greats like Onega, Rattin, Perfumo, Marzolini, Mas, and Pastoriza. Argentina's campaign showed promise but was ultimately undermined by a relentlessly provocative approach. Elimination came in an infamous Quarter-Final tie at Wembley against the tournament hosts, a game remembered most for the controversial sending off of the Argentinian captain Antonio Rattin.
