Paolo Mantovani took over the presidency of Sampdoria in 1979, and his visionary leadership started to pay dividends this season with Samp winning promotion to Serie A following a five-year absence.
Renzo Ullivieri’s attack-minded side led the Serie B table for much of the season, though a loss in the final round of fixtures to Foggia allowed Verona to edge ahead and take the title, meaning Samp had to make do with the runners-up position. Within a matter of weeks, Roberto Mancini would sign for the club, setting Samp on a path towards what would become their greatest era.
