Club Brugge accumulated Belgian titles with ease during the 1970s, winning five of them between 1973 and 1980. The following decade proved challenging for the club to recapture former glories. The title was lost on goal difference in 1986, but it was clear that a fine new team was gradually emerging.

The 1987-88 season saw it come together in some style with the title returning to the city after an 8 year absence. A free-scoring team boasted the brilliant attacking partnership of 25-goal Marc Degryse and Danish international Kenneth Brylle. Backing up the attack was a strong and balanced midfield featuring Franky van der Elst, Jan Ceulemans and Leo van der Elst.
