With FC Luzern approaching its sixth decade as a force in the Swiss game, the 1959 - 60 season was a breakthrough campaign that saw die Leuchten win its first major honour - the Swiss Cup. In one of his earliest coaching roles Rudi Gutendorf led his side to success overcoming the toughest of opposition on the way - domestic champions Young Boys were defeated 3-1 in the semi-finals and cup holders FC Grenchen 1-0 in the final itself.

30,000 in the Wankdorf stadium in Berne witnessed a late winner from Robert Blättler and long-serving Luzern captain Paul Wolfisberg lifting the trophy.
