Domestically the Primeira Liga was lost to Benfica by a narrow 3 point margin despite the ever-reliable scoring contribution of joint League top scorer Fernando Gomes. The prolific striker also netted in the Taça de Portugal Final as Porto overcame Rio Ave by a comfortable 4-1 margin, but main Cup competition excitement arrived in the shape of the European Cup Winners’ Cup as FC Porto reached a first-ever European Final. That Final against Juventus was lost unfortunately, a disappointing end to an emotional season that saw legendary coach and former player José Maria Pedroto step down mid-campaign with an unexpected illness that would tragically claim his life soon after.
