In what would be the last season in charge of the long-serving Hungarian coach Péter Pázmándy, Servette had to be content with a runners-up finish in the Swiss League along with qualification for the following season’s UEFA Cup. The Geneva side finished three points adrift of champions Grasshoppers despite playing entertaining and free-scoring football for much of the campaign. Goals came from all over the pitch, mainly from strikers Marc Schnyder and Angelo Elia, midfielder Lucien Favre, and Moroccan defender Mustapha Yagcha.
