1905 was the year of the first Dutch national team fixture, the first national team victory and the emergence of the first national team superstar. On the 30th of April the Oranje travelled to Antwerp for a debut match against future classic rivals, Belgium.
The Dutch led until a late own goal took the game to extra-time. Up stepped forward Eddy de Neve and his hat-trick gave Holland a comfortable 4-1 win and the Coupe van den Abeele trophy that went with it. The same player added another two goals in the return fixture a fortnight later as the Dutch romped to a 4-0 win in Rotterdam.
