The appointment of the Frenchman Bruno Metsu as coach in 2000 was the catalyst for a transformation in the fortunes of the Senegal national team. The first tournament he took charge for was that year's African Nations Cup, and a reasonable showing was ended by the co-hosts Nigeria in the Quarter Finals.
