Ecuador travelled to Uruguay for the 1983 Copa America, and Ernest Guerra's side found themselves drawn in a difficult group alongside Brazil and Argentina. La Tricolor put in respectable performances in their games against Argentina, drawing both 2-2 with Galo Vasquez, Jose Vega, Lupo Quinonez, and Hans Maldonado scoring the goals.

Unfortunately, performances against Brazil were not so strong, and both those games were lost, one heavily, meaning Ecuador finished bottom of their group and were eliminated.
