The 1958/59 season saw Real Betis finally return to the La Liga after many years drifting between the second and third tiers. Fears that competition at this level might be too fierce for los verdiblancos were never realised as the well-drilled side crafted by coach Antonio Barrios scored and conceded goals freely on the way to a strong 6th placed finish.

Highlights of the season included home and away derby wins against Sevilla and a crushing 7-0 home win over Real Zaragoza.
