New coach Marcel Tomazover took over a Red Star side in the middle of a seven season run in Ligue 1. The team he inherited had finished the 1969-70 campaign in 13th spot and he hoped to improve their fortunes with a busy summer in the transfer market.

Out went international midfielder Yves Herbert after just a season in the capital and up and coming striker Jacky Vergnes after two. To replace them Red Star brought in Jacques Simon, a midfielder who had been member of France's 1966 World Cup squad and Walter Ferreira, a journeyman Portuguese forward.

The newcomers were unable to lift a Red Star team that spent the 1970-71 season battling relegation before finally finishing in 15th position.
