The hosting by Los Angeles of the 1984 Summer Olympics was a great opportunity for the United States team to enjoy home advantage and capture the imagination of a curious domestic audience in the soccer event.

Unfortunately, the adventure ended prematurely in the group stage of the competition. With an entirely domestic-based squad comprising players from NASL and Major Indoor Soccer League, the USA defeated Costa Rica, drew with Egypt, and lost narrowly to Italy. Both the US and Egypt ended their group with the same points total and goal difference, but it was Egypt that progressed, having scored a single goal more.

The two goals that the St. Louis Streamers midfielder Rich Davis fired home against Costa Rica ensured that he finished as the USA’s top scorer for the tournament.
