Milan's three previous European Cup campaigns had been ended by Spanish teams, so while the 1962-63 European Cup avoided the Spanish champions, it did reach its climax against another mighty team from the Iberian peninsula - Benfica.
This was the hardest match of a campaign that had taken them past opposition from Luxembourg, England, Turkey and Scotland amidst a flood of goals, particularly by the ever-prolific naturalised striker José Altafini who finished the tournament with 14 of them in just 9 games.
He turned the Wembley Final in Milan's favour too after the Portuguese led at half-time through a Eusébio goal. Benfica's star man was expertly contained after that by Giovanni Trapattoni and Altafini scored twice in 11 minutes to deservedly win the trophy for the rossoneri.
