Almost immediately following their Coppa Italia win against Torino, Roma's squad boarded a plane for the US to take part in the inaugural Trans-Atlantic Cup. The Italians had been booked to take part in the four-team competition alongside Manchester City, Vancouver Whitecaps, and the hosts, New York Cosmos.

Their first game against the Whitecaps ended in a 1-1 draw, and three days later Roma went down to a thrilling 5-3 defeat against the Cosmos, the eventual tournament winners. One other friendly game was scheduled before Roma were due to fly home and resulted in a 2-1 defeat against the Toronto Blizzard.
