The 1985-86 season did not quite reach the same heights as the previous campaign for Atlético Madrid with coach Luis Aragonés unable to build on that runner’s-up spot in La Liga and Copa del Rey win.

The 13 goals scored by both the South American attacking forwards Luis Mario Cabrera and Jorge da Silva were good enough to propel Atlético into a fifth-placed finish and European qualification for the following season.
