Firstly Bernard Challandes then former long-serving defender Jean-Marie Conz tried to turn the tide as Young Boys shifted from being a club that habitually qualified for the championship play-off round to one having to play in the promotion / relegation group to retain top-flight status.

Influential veterans like Martin Weber, Alain Baumann and Georges Bregy brought experience to the side while players like Adrian Kunz, Thomas Hartmann and Gaetano Giallanza were able to score the goals Young Boys needed to survive.
