The 1976–77 season stands as one of the most complete chapters in Club Brugge’s rich history.
Under Ernst Happel new faces blended seamlessly into the collective. On the third-to-last matchday Club clinched the title at Olympia. A commanding 3–0 victory, sealed by a Vandereycken hat-trick, crowned Brugge champions.
The season still had one glorious act left. Club Brugge stormed to the Belgian Cup final, where arch-rivals Anderlecht awaited. Anderlecht raced into a 2–0 lead, Lambert responded, but Anderlecht struck back immediately: 3–1. Mentally unbreakable, Club fought on. Le Fevre pulled one back, and in the second half Davies etched his name into Brugge folklore, scoring twice to complete an unforgettable comeback.
In Europe firstly Steaua Bucharest were eliminated, followed by a legendary encounter with Real Madrid, held to a disciplined 0–0 draw. In Bruges, Club struck decisively: a long-range strike from Le Fevre and an own goal before half-time sealed a historic 2–0 victory.
The quarter-finals brought Borussia Mönchengladbach. Club surged to a surprising 0–2 lead in Germany, eventually drawing 2–2. At Olympia Brugge resisted heroically and for a moment, qualification was theirs until the 83rd minute, when Gladbach found the decisive opening. The dream ended, but pride remained. Club Brugge left the European stage once more with heads held high champions at home, cup winners, and among Europe’s very finest.
