Although the 1980s were a difficult time at the national level for the Club Nacional de Football, on the international stage the Uruguayan giant shone and in 1988 became champion of America and the World for the third time. Also, in 1989 Nacional won the Recopa Sudamericana and the Inter-American Cup.

Roberto Fleitas led his players trough a gruelin Libertadores campaign. After qualifying in the group stage against the Colombian teams, Nacional reached the final with Newell's Old Boys after eliminating Universidad Catolica and America de Cali. A single goal first-leg defeat was overcome in style with an emphatic 3-0 win, the decisive goal coming from the recently returning legend Hugo De Leon.

Prolific midfielder Santiago Ostolaza was the hero in Tokyo with two goals against PSV. The match ended tied in extra time and Nacional won the Intercontinental Cup on penalties.
