The 1968 Olympic football competition was dominated by the Eastern Bloc states and their professional amateurs. Despite a loss against Colombia, France still topped their group table with earlier wins over Guinea and Mexico. They advanced to a Quarter-Final tie against little-fancied Japan. Hopes of a medal started to appear more realistic until the Japanese pulled the surprise of the tournament and recorded a deserved 3-1 victory. The disappointed French side featured three players who would go on to represent the full national team, most notably Saint Etienne midfielder Jean-Michel Larqué.
