A turning point arrived in the late 1980s with the appointment of Franco Scoglio as head coach. His first season proved remarkable: Genoa won the Serie B championship, leading the table from the second round and conceding just 13 goals in 38 matches.

The key to success was excellent recruitment, with the arrivals of Signorini in defence, Onorati and Ruotolo in midfield, and Nappi and Fontolan in attack. All made strong contributions and helped nurture the development of Genoa’s outstanding midfield talent, Stefano Eranio.
