Having earned promotion the previous season as Division 3 champions, Grimsby Town carried on where they had left off in their 1980-81 Division 2 campaign. Ultimately, their impressive 7th placed finish told only half the story as George Kerr's side had looked set for what would have been a record-breaking third successive promotion to take them into the top-flight after a 33 year absence. Unfortunately, a single victory from their last 7 games cost them their chance.

This famous Town side was based around a strong core that included keeper Nigel Batch, influential central defender Kevin Moore, midfielder Joe Waters, winger Tony Ford, and promising young striker Kevin Drinkell.
