The first foray of the University of Guadalajara into professional football occurred in the early 70s, with a team made up of students. After a few years in the lower divisions, the team bought a franchise and this is how 'Leones' reached the First Division of Mexican football. They made their debut on July 14, 1974.

UdeG immediately drew attention for their colorful uniform, their mythical shield, and for hiring national team players, as well as four Brazilian, who gave them the nickname 'Black Lions'. In its first years in the First Division, the team reached two finals in consecutive seasons, unfortunately they lost both against America and Pumas, however, due to their spectacular style of play, they were known as 'The Team That Was Born Great'.
