The 1996-97 season was a historic one for Lierse SK as the club surprised the Belgian game by securing the fourth national championship in its history. The success came after a thrilling battle with Club Brugge, the contest decided in the penultimate round as Lierse jumped ahead in the race after coming from behind to defeat Genk. Bob Peeters, newcomer Philip Haagdoren, and Brazilian Zefilho contributed strongly to the goal output of Eric Gerets' title-winning side.
