Curiously the toughest fixture of the club's 1959 Cup run was against semi-professional Tooting & Mitcham United what was the weakest team they faced. Forest progressed through the competition eliminating Grimsby Town, Birmingham City after two replays, Bolton Wanderers then Aston Villa in the semi-finals.

Their Wembley opponents were fellow Division One side Luton Town and Forest made the best possible start scoring two goals in the opening 14 minutes. The first came from winger Roy Dwight who had arrived at the start of the season from Fulham at considerable cost, then centre forward Tommy Wilson added a second soon after.

Dwight's leg-break before half-time left Forest with ten men and although Luton pulled a goal back in the second-half, the Nottingham club held out to win the competition for the first time in 51 years and just the second time overall.
