While recognising their fine achievements back in the 1930s, the decade that would provide the Peruvian national team with its greatest moments was the 1970s. Under Brazilian coach Didi the nation qualified for the 1970 World Cup - its first for four decades - by eliminating Argentina. A wonderfully attack-minded side featuring national legends like Sotil, Chumpitaz, Oblitas and Cubillas surpassed all expectations by reaching the Second Round.

It was a similar story at the 1978 World Cup when a team written off as too old qualified from a tough group before being eliminated by hosts Argentina. Sandwiched between their two World Cup adventures was a Copa America success in 1975, the first in the tournament since 1939 and their most recent to date.
