With their glorious 70s era looking to be behind them, the Polish national team bounced back in some style with an exceptionally strong performance at the 1982 World Cup in Spain.

This was a squad featuring stars like Boniek, Buncol, Smolarek, and Zmuda, and it won its World Cup group thanks, in main, to a 5-1 demolition of Peru - all the goals were scored in a 21-minute spell during the second half. Another emphatic win followed in the second group stage with Belgium defeated thanks to a Boniek hat-trick.

This earned the Poles another semi-finals place where eventual winners Italy proved just too strong. Poland could be satisfied with their achievement of third place earned with a play-off victory over France.
