1974 was a famous year in the history of Vasco da Gama with the club becoming Brazilian national champions for the first time. The 1975 campaign under coach Mario Travaglini did not scale those same heights with Vasco being eliminated in the second phase of the competition. This was still a strong and competitive team, however, with influential players like the Argentinian keeper Edgardo Andrada, defenders Fred and Joel Santana, midfielder Gilson Nunes, and an impressive attack that featured Edu Antunes, Ademir, and the star man Roberto Dinamite.
