While the 1985 domestic season was not a particularly notable one on the field of play for Vasco da Gama, gradually emerging were a number of talented youngsters who would star for the Rio giants and go on to have stellar careers in Europe.

Midfield featured the precocious trio of Mazinho, Donato, and Geovani, while this was the season the world was first introduced to the deadly young striker Romario. The 19-year-old made 28 appearances in his debut season and scored a respectable 11 goals. He would win state titles with Vasco before moving to Europe in 1988, however he earned the status of a club legend by returning to Vasco 12 years later for the second of his four spells there.
