The 1972 - 73 season saw Hennes Weisweiler's thrilling Mönchengladbach side excel in cup competitions. A Bundesliga campaign bringing a fifth-placed finish, but more memorable was the famous extra-time success in the final of the DFB-Pokal against Köln, the winner scored by substitute Günter Netzer in his last-ever appearance for the club.

Mönchengladbach were just as dominant in Europe and reached a first-ever UEFA Cup Final in style with 9 wins and 36 goals scored in their 12 matches. A 3-0 first leg defeat away at Liverpool proved too big a margin to overhaul in the return despite a stirring performance and a double by the ever-prolific Jupp Heynckes.
