ABE LENSTRA X COPA
Together with sc Heerenveen and the KNVB, COPA proudly presents the Holland ‘Abe Lenstra’ 1959 Retro Football Shirt, a tribute to one of the greatest players in Dutch football history and the final chapter of his remarkable international career.
On 19 April 1959, Abe Lenstra stepped onto the pitch at Amsterdam’s Olympic Stadium for his 47th and final appearance for Holland. Almost two decades had passed since his international debut in 1940, making his Oranje career one of extraordinary longevity. And there could hardly have been a more fitting ending.
Facing Belgium, Lenstra found the net one final time, scoring his 33rd international goal and signing off from the national team in the way supporters had come to know him best: by scoring.
His international career ultimately spanned 19 years and 19 days, still the longest period between a first and final appearance for the Dutch national team.
For sc Heerenveen, however, Abe Lenstra represents much more than statistics. He became the defining figure of the club and one of the most celebrated footballers Friesland has ever produced. His talent attracted supporters from across the country and helped establish Heerenveen’s place in Dutch football history.
That story provided the inspiration for this special shirt.
Together with sc Heerenveen and the KNVB, we have brought the Oranje shirt associated with Lenstra’s final international game back to life. The cotton construction reflects the simplicity of football shirts from the era, while the historic KNVB crest and subtle references to Abe throughout the design give the shirt its own character.
It is a celebration of a player whose legacy continues to connect sc Heerenveen, Friesland and Oranje more than sixty years after his final international appearance.
A piece of Dutch football history, created for a new generation of supporters.
For lovers of Oranje.
