The little-known Arrigo Sacchi shocked the world of Italian football when he was appointed as Milan coach in the summer of 1987. He arrived with new ideas and new players like Carlo Ancelotti and the two brilliant Dutchmen Marco Van Basten and Ruud Gullit.
His revolutionary ideas took a little while to take hold, but the longer the 1987-88 season progressed the better Milan were becoming and they slowly started to rein in the lead of defending champions, Napoli. The turning point came in early May when the teams met in Naples for a virtual title-decider. Milan played brilliantly and deservedly won 3-2 thanks to goals by Van Basten and two by the veteran Pietro Paolo Virdis, setting the club up for a first title win in 9 years.
