Holland was producing fine players from its earliest days and under English coach Bob Glendenning the national team would first thrust itself onto a grander stage when qualifying for the World Cup in 1934.

Experienced players like Puck van Heel, Wim Anderiesen and Leen Vente led the way, but it would be the emergence of striker Johanes 'Kick' Smit that would elevate the reputation of Dutch football. He scored in the narrow 3-2 defeat to Switzerland that ended Holland's interest in the tournament and would continue to average a goal a game over the rest of his illustrious international career.
