Servette Geneva began the 21st century as Switzerland's champions after winning its 17th Swiss title at the climax of the 1998/99 season.

Emphatic form in the Fall season saw them finish 6 points clear of Grasshoppers and the bonus points they took into the Championship Group proved invaluable. A close three-way battle took place with Grasshoppers and Lausanne and those bonus points ensured a narrow overall title win for les grenats.

Alexandre Rey was comfortably the League's top scorer with 19 goals and he was ably assisted by the Dutchman Edwin Vurens. Bulgarian newcomer Martin Petrov proved to be a dangerous addition on the wing for coach Gérard Castella.
