Led by Graham Taylor, under the ownership of Elton John, Watford followed up their second-place finish in the First Division with the club’s first venture into Europe and finishing the season with a visit to Wembley for an FA Cup Final. Having defeated Kaiserslautern of Germany, then Levski Spartak Sofia of Bulgaria, Watford eventually exited the UEFA Cup at the hands of Sparta Prague who proved too strong over the two legs.

With Luther Blissett having departed for AC Milan for a record fee of £1m, Hornet’s new Scottish strike partnership of Mo Johnston and George Reilly fired the club to a first ever FA Cup Final. A strong early showing in the final was undone by a Graeme Sharpe opener for Everton, then a hotly disputed Andy Gray goal, proved enough for the Toffees to lift the trophy.
