Brentford spent the entirety of the 1980s playing their League football in England's third tier, so the 1984 - 85 season stood out for the club as it brought the welcome bonus of a Wembley final appearance.

With a powerful team featuring Keith Millen, Terry Hurlock and Chris Kamara, Brentford eased past Reading, Cambridge United, Swansea City, Bournemouth and Newport County to reach the final of that season's Freight Rover Trophy. In front of 40,000 at Wembley the Bees went down 3-1 to Wigan Athletic, despite a Robbie Cooke goal early in the second half threatening a comeback.
