The 1985 - 86 season began with Brentford in the middle of a run of fourteen consecutive seasons in the Third Division, and few of those campaigns had suggested the club was ready to move on to bigger and better things.

The former Arsenal and Scotland defender Frank McLintock was appointed as manager in 1984 and took the Bees to Wembley for a Freight Rover Trophy Final with Wigan Athletic at the end of his first season in charge. That final was lost 3-1 and the experience didn't seem to carry forward much momentum as the new season got underway.

With a defence that featured a couple of club legends - the up-and-coming Keith Millen and the veteran Danis Salman, Brentford's problems came more at the other end of the field where goals were hard to come by. The club finished the season in 10th place which at least represented an improvement over the previous campaign.
