For FC Lugano the early 1950s represented an unremarkable time in footballing terms. Champions of Switzerland as recently as 1949, under former Swiss World Cup international Tulio Grassi the club drifted to mid-table regulars who were very strong at home but travelled less well.
In 1951 other matters were the focus however. After spending a half century at the Camp Marzio, Lugano's strong standing led to a new stadium being built and the new Cornaredo Stadium was inaugurated on the 26th of August that year. It would host a match at the 1954 World Cup and remains Lugano's home to this day.
