Relegated to the third tier the previous season, the 1992 - 93 campaign saw Port Vale come close to bouncing straight back up. A third-placed finish took them into the play-offs where they fell just short after losing to West Brom in the Final.

There were other things for John Rudge's side to celebrate however as the club won the Football League Trophy after defeating Stockport 2-1 in the final. Veteran Scottish striker Bernie Slaven scored the decisive goal, ably backed up by the new midfield revelation Ian Taylor who was the club's player of the year and top scorer with 19 goals from midfield.
