The 1980 – 81 season was one of highs and lows for TSV 1860 München. In walked Rudi Völler, a young talent joining from Kickers Offenbach, who quickly looked at home at 1860. Völler hit double figures in the iconic Doppeldusch-sponsored shirt in his debut season, a glimpse of what was to follow from the German striker, helping Die Löwen to a near invincible form away from home going unbeaten for all but two away games.

In the end and after putting up a fierce fight, Die Sechzger had to cede their spot in the Bundesliga after a narrow relegation by just one point.
